Search is going through a generational change as AI overviews and generative AI answers many questions people used to reserve for Google. We have many thoughts on how AI ‘chat-first’ search will disrupt classic SEO, but there is still upside to building a strong SEO foundation.
What is SEO vs AI Overview Optimization?
SEO is a well-established practice that involves optimizing websites and their content to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs) for relevant keywords. The goal is to increase organic traffic, visibility, and ultimately, conversions. SEO strategies include keyword research, on-page optimization (e.g., title tags, meta descriptions, header tags), link building, and technical improvements (e.g., site speed, mobile-friendliness). These techniques help search engines like Google understand and rank a website’s content better.
In contrast, AI-driven optimization for chat-based search results is a newer concept that has gained prominence with the rise of conversational AI and chat-based interfaces. As users increasingly rely on AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants to find information, organizations need to adapt their content strategies to be more visible in these chat-based search results. This involves optimizing content for natural language queries, focusing on question-answer formats, and leveraging AI technologies like natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) to generate relevant, conversational responses.
Why is SEO important?
Many people use the major search engines – Google, Bing, and Yahoo – to discover. Organic traffic visits are usually from users who haven’t heard of your organization before. These search engines allow your website to reach new audiences. If your site is the destination, then search engines are the roads that will get people there. In other words, they provide new, targeted traffic. For example – if on your site you sell shoes, google will send you people specifically looking to buy shoes. So if you can get your site to the first page of Google, you gain incredible opportunities.
STEP 1 – Find a resource for beginners
I recommend starting with this SEO resource from MOZ, the best place for that is “The Beginner’s Guide To SEO”. Then surround your information sources with these resources to get a constant drip of knowledge.
- Moz Blog
- Neil Patel’s Blog
- Reddit SEO
- Search Engine Journal’s ebook “SEO in the Age of AI“. This ebook compiles SEJ’s best articles, strategies, and recommendations for adapting SEO strategies to the AI landscape.
- Search Engine Land’s guide on starting an SEO program in the AI age. This resource provides insights on how to build an SEO approach from scratch in the era of AI. It contrasts outdated tactics from 2014 with the evolved strategies needed today.
- Heavybit’s guide to SEO in the Age of AI and modern best practices.
STEP 2 – Build and measure your site
I don’t care how many books your read about riding a bike, there is no substitute for practice in the pool. The best way to do that is to practice on your own website, and then connect Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools. This will show you how attention flows from a search engine to your site.
As you implement various SEO techniques, regularly monitor your site’s performance using these tools. Analyze metrics such as organic traffic, keyword rankings, click-through rates, and user engagement to identify areas for improvement and track your progress over time.

STEP 3: Write 10 articles
Write 10 high-quality articles that are closely related to your website’s main theme or niche. Tips on how to write content that will get discovered.
Finding relevant topics to write about can be challenging, but there are AI-powered tools like ChatGPT (https://chat.openai.com/) that can help simplify the process. ChatGPT is a conversational AI model that can assist you in generating ideas, outlines, and even full articles based on your input.
STEP 4- Find a Mentor
There will always be somebody smarter than you somewhere in the world. So, why not learn from that person? How do you find that person? Networking – ask around, talk to your friends, search on LinkedIn, go to SEO networking events, etc. Be creative about it, but make sure to find a mentor. A good dose of inspiration never hurts so: “A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you.”
STEP 5 – Join an SEO Group
This is one of the best pieces of advice to live by – “If you want to be a gardener, hang around people who are gardeners. If you want to be a race car driver, hang around race car drivers. If you want to be somebody in the future, be around the people you want to become.” Joining an SEO group in your area will help you become an SEO professional. Why don’t you give this a try: SEO Meetups
If you can’t find something in your area, then follow the advice from Step 3 and backtrack to networking. Again, ask your friends, search the web, or be proactive and start your own meetup.
STEP 6 – Rinse & Repeat
Following each step thoroughly, and determination will get you to the finish line in no time. Learn, Do, Repeat. Don’t get discouraged, and remember that each journey towards greatness begins with a single step. When you feel like you’ve mastered the basics, start focusing on the nuances: meta descriptions, alt tags, and Google Search Console.
